Project Highlight

MWOA volunteer teams have the special privilege of traveling all over the world to partner with other ministries and nonprofits, supporting them as they minister to and lift up their communities. In many cases, this leads them to meet some special people and hear unique and moving stories. The following is a story shared by project leader Joe Sclafani, MWOA state coordinator for Pennsylvania:

"With three trips to Puerto Rico this year, and another planned for August, there are many stories to tell but one stands out; Nancy’s story. The night Hurricane Maria hit, Nancy and her family hunkered down in the cement house across the road from her house. Reason being, her house is made of wood...the only one in the neighborhood. She thought she and her family were going to watch their house completely destruct. It didn’t. It sustained considerable damage, but it withstood the storm of the century. This house not only survived Maria but four major hurricanes before it. Nancy believes it was angels that held her house together. That is the only logical explanation.

But even with the angels protection, there was work to be done. In four days our team replaced the roof, new sub floor and tile floor throughout, a new electrical service and various other repairs. As Nancy gazed up up to her new roof she was so very grateful and proud. It was as if we encrusted that roof with diamonds! As for us, all we were doing was helping the angels hold Nancy’s house together."

We count it a privilege to serve alongside volunteer teams like this as they assist those still working to restore their lives after such traumatic events.
